Recognition of giftedness is based on cultural standards. This recognition (or not) may have a strong impact on a whole life.
The most important is not the recognition in itself, but how harmful this (or not) recognition can be on a child development and then on an adult life.
In Conception of Giftedness – Second Edition – 2005 (Cambridge University Press) , Joan Freeman highlights these impacts in a communication called : “Permission to Be Gifted : How Conceptions of Giftedness Can Change Lives” (Pages 80 to 97 of the document on line).
